The protracted labor dispute between the National Football League and its players’ union will result in the suspension of sports coverage in the Daily News during the upcoming NFL season. Producers of Daily Newser will be called upon to provide coverage during the critical and lucrative month of September.

“This is one of the worst things that’s ever happened to the Daily News,” said editor and publisher Sally Singer. “What fans love is getting the scoop in sports.”

Plans call for non-sports coverage of the Mets, Mets GM Sandy Alderson’s investments in the 2010 Jets and Red Sox infielder Dustin Pedroia to ramp up as the labor stalemate unfolds. Among the underwriters for the weekdays and weekends is Time Inc., the parent company of Daily Newser.

“It’s like Groundhog Day,” said an employee. “We deal with things that happen every day all week, and then it happens again on the weekends. We love being in business.”
