A teenager from Lubbock, Texas, shot and killed his mother in her sleep at home on Friday night before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.
The 16-year-old boy, named as Cody J. Laneby by police, has been charged with murder.
The boy’s 17-year-old girlfriend, Lizzy Jo Friend, of Lubbock, was also charged with capital murder. A 17-year-old girl, named by CNN as Jordan J. Moody, was also arrested.
The three teenagers were staying at the house, as well as two other children who were home at the time, according to CNN.
After shooting his mother, Laneby went outside to get a gun from a trailer home and then killed himself.
Investigators told CNN that the teens had recently begun a relationship but that it was unknown whether the relationship had been abusive.
Lubbock Police Officer Benny Henson told ABC News that Laneby came home from his girlfriend’s house and took his guns from a closet before killing himself.
The identities of the children were not made public.
Friend and Moody were due in court on Tuesday. Moody was the suspect in an “open and ongoing case of vandalism” and Friend was the surviving suspect. Both were being held in the Lubbock County Detention Center, according to CNN.
